The Foundation's future depends on cultivating new donors with a strong sense of civic responsibility and a vision for the future. We do this by reaching out to young philanthropists, ages 25-45, through the BEACH FUND.

This innovative campaign provides younger donors opportunities to network with their peers and be actively involved in the community. Each year The BEACH FUND Steering Committee recommends that grants totaling $10,000 be awarded to the nonprofit organizations of their choice.

This is made possible through the generosity of BEACH FUND patrons, more established donors who agree to provide advice and encouragement for their younger counterparts. They contribute to a fund established specifically for distribution by BEACH FUND members.

"Being generous or willing to give are traits many people possess," said a former BEACH FUND patron. "Trial and error is not necessarily the best way to learn about giving. The BEACH FUND offers coaching from professionals and support from those who have been at it for a while."

"It sounded like a great idea," said BEACH FUND member John Stein. "They're trying to introduce the younger generation to the spirit of giving. I've been very lucky, and this community has supported me. There are so many needy organizations out there; who better to support them than young people?"

Members of the BEACH FUND Steering Committee study grant proposals for organizations that address their priorities. The committee chair oversees the process. The chair also works with Foundation staff to recruit new members and plan occasional get-togethers.

Attorney M. Powell Peters reflected on his role as a BEACH FUND member: "The City of Virginia Beach is a wonderful place to work and raise a family. I am grateful for the opportunity to shape what our future will look like and how we will get there."
